The new "size zero" businesses
A new breed of leaner, "size zero" businesses is emerging – firms that are stripping out non-core activities, so they can focus on their main area of expertise whilst tapping into their networks for everything else, outsourcing as and when they need something. That's the finding of a new CitySprint report, Collaborate UK. Based on feedback from 700 SMEs, the survey found that 24% of firms are more open to working with other businesses than they were before the downturn.
Technology is "tipping point" for success
Almost 80% of companies believe that technology plays an essential part in their plans for growth, according to a new study commissioned by TalkTalk Business based on research by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). The Geared for Growth report has found that 10% of firms – the so-called "strivers" – have set growth as their number one goal. 52% of respondents are classified as "thrivers", with modest growth ambitions. "Despondents", who expect their businesses to downsize in the near future, make up 5% of businesses surveyed.
Free guidance on Bribery Act
Solicitors Mackrell Turner Garrett has produced a free guide advising companies about the implications of the Bribery Act. It sets out the background of the Act, the current approach of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), steps that need to be taken to avoid liability, response to misconduct and the consequences of prosecution. Self-assessment is at the heart of the SFO's approach to enforcing the act and the consequences of breaching it can include criminal sentencing and/or penalties, and possible confiscation orders.
App building on the rise
Britons are increasingly coming up with ideas for apps – and getting programmers to do the development work for them. Statistics from Freelancer.co.uk show that there has been a 100% increase in Britons hiring a programmer via the website to design an app for them over the past 12 months. The survey of 2,000 people in the UK found that 45% have had an idea for an app and will hire a programmer to get it designed.
