Business tech bargain: a cheap, super-portable laptop

July 17, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain: Asus laptop{{}}

Cheap. Powerful. Light. When you're looking to buy a new business laptop, you usually have to settle for two of these three requirements.

Quite simply, the smaller and more powerful your laptop is, the more you'll have paid for it.

And while this dinky 11" Asus laptop isn't exactly super-powered, it has enough oomph to browse the internet and run your standard business software, like Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.

Weighing in at 1.3kg and currently available from Amazon for just £330, it certainly ticks the 'cheap' and 'light' boxes. Ok, it's not quite as featherlight as something like an 11" MacBook Air, but then it's well under half the price too.

This Asus Vivo is also equipped with a touch screen and an adequate 4GB of memory, although it's worth bearing in mind you'll probably only get about half a day's work in before you need to recharge the battery.

Still, at £330 it's a definite bargain.

Business tech bargain: cheap network attached storage for backups

July 12, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain: Seagate NAS{{}}A network attached storage (NAS) device is a fancy name for a hard drive you can plug directly into your business computer network.

Once it's connected up, everyone on your network can access and use it to store files and data. If your business doesn't have a network server on which to store shared files, NAS can be a good way to centralise data without having to spend a fortune.

Tradtionally, NAS devices have been pretty expensive. However, there's now a good choice at the budget end of the spectrum too, including this super-cheap option from long-time hard drive manufacturer Seagate.

An entry-level NAS

The Seagate 2TB central NAS is a basic NAS, offering 2 terabytes (TB) of data storage for an eminently-reasonable £113. That's enough space for thousands and thousands of documents, but you may require more storage if you hold lots of larger files.

Because this is a cheap NAS drive, it's not really designed to share data between more than a couple of people working on a network. It's unlikely to have the performance to serve files up quickly to several people at once.

However, cheap storage is always useful and so this NAS could be an ideal way to backup your key business data. Combine it with a cloud backup service (perhaps something like Mozy, Dropbox or Livedrive) and you'll have a straightforward backup system that should keep you safe in most scenarios.

Business tech bargain: all-in-one inkjet office printer

July 05, 2013 by John McGarvey

Business tech bargain - Epson printer{{}}If you need a cheap, capable way to print and scan in your office, this Epson Workforce WF-2520NF 4-in-1 inkjet printer may fit the bill.

As it's an inkjet printer, it's probably best-suited to relatively low-volume printing. However, it's a decent model from a reputable manufacturer, and as it's currently available to buy online for just £55 from Dabs.

Useful features include:

  • Built-in network connection, so you can plug it straight into your existing network and share the printer easily.
  • 30-sheet automatic document feeder, enabling it to automatically scan documents without you having to feed each page in manually.
  • Built-in fax functions, just in case you ever need to send or receive a fax.

Reviews suggest print quality is decent and extra-large ink cartridges are available, which should reduce your running costs a bit and mean you don't have to replace them so frequently.

This printer is also available from Amazon (£55.97), eBuyer (£82.78) and Misco (£87.60).

Business tech bargain: Microsoft Office single copy

June 21, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain: Microsoft Office{{}}If you run a business, you probably use Microsoft Office. And if you need to buy a single copy, it ain't cheap. Figure on paying £219 direct from Microsoft.

(Versions designed for home use are much cheaper, but the catch is that the software's licence agreement says it can't be used for business purposes.)

It is possible to save a bit on this by shopping around. At the moment, you can pick up the exact same package - Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013 - for £178.99. That's a saving of £40 on the Microsoft price.

See details and buy from Amazon >>

For that you get full copies of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, which are all the major office packages you're likely to need in your day-to-day work.

If you're planning to buy, just be aware that all Amazon will send you is a card containing a licence key for the software. There's no disc included, so you have to download the software online, then activate it with your licence key.

It's probably one of the more expensive pieces of paper you'll ever buy, but if you need Microsoft Office then it's money well spent.

Business tech bargain: Big Dell laptop, small price

June 14, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain: Dell Inspiron 17{{}}Because they're too big to slip into a typical bag and carry around, 17" laptops aren't for everyone.

However, if you're keen to have a big screen and a keyboard with a numeric pad, and you want a machine you can move round the office and take out occasionally, a 17" model might be for you.

If you want to see how a laptop with a larger screen suits you, Dell's Inspiron 17 is currently available from just £335 including VAT and delivery.

See details and buy from Dell >>

That's a great price for a PC which has received decent reviews, and while the entry-level model isn't exactly over-powered, it still has enough oomph to run standard business software like Microsoft Office.

The Inspiron's real stand-out feature is its screen, which is crisp, clear and manages a resolution of 1,600 x 900 pixels. Most laptops in this price bracket make do with lower-resolution 1,366 x 768 screens.

In all, this is an excellent tech bargain if you're looking for a big laptop at a small price.

Business tech bargain: external Blu-ray writer under £60

June 07, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain - Blu-ray writer{{}}Even in these days of cloud storage and giant hard drives, removable discs have their uses. And if you need to cram a lot of data onto a single disc, you'll be wanting a recordable Blu-ray drive, like this tech bargain from Samsung.

It's an external Blu-ray recorder, which means you can just plug it into your computer via USB and start burning discs. There's no need to even connect a separate power cable, as this Blu-ray writer is powered from your computer's USB port.

It's made by reputable manufacturer Samsung and is currently available for £59.99 from both Amazon and Dabs.

See details and buy now from: Amazon  |  Dabs

Blu-ray discs are most often used to store high-definition video, and over the last few years they've begun to replace DVDs. However, just like DVDs, Blu-ray discs can also be used to store data. And because they offer a much higher capacity than DVDs and CDs, they're a good option for backing up and storing data.

Of course, Blu-ray discs created with this drive can only be read by other Blu-ray players. But you can also use it to burn data to standard DVDs and CDs.

Business tech bargain: a massive 3TB hard drive for less

June 03, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain hard drive{{}}Data, data, data. Your business is almost certainly creating more of it than ever. So, where can you keep it all?

How about this Toshiba external hard drive? The StoreE Canvio hard drive might be a strange, badly-capitalised name, but with 3TB (terabytes) of storage space it has room for an enormous amount of data.

And although the amount of storage is high, the price of this tech bargain is low. You can currently pick it up from Dabs for just £83.98, which is one of the cheapest 3TB drives we've ever seen.

About this tech bargain

It's sometimes hard to understand what a volume of storage like '3TB' means in practice. So, in real-world terms this Toshiba external hard drive is certainly big enough to back up all the information on your own computer, with plenty of data to spare.

In fact, 3TB is enough to store:

  • Enough music to play continously for over four years without repeating a track
  • Around 600 full-length DVD movies
  • Over 20 million typical business Word documents (like simple letters or reports)

The point is that 3TB is enough to back up an awful lot of your valuable business data.

There are two other important points to note about this bargain hard drive:

  • It has a USB 3.0 connection, which means if your computer has USB 3.0 capabilities then it'll transfer data nice and quickly.
  • It comes with a separate power adaptor that you have to plug in, so it's not ideal for portable use.

In terms of high-capacity storage offering value for money, it's probably the best you'll find.

Business tech bargain: get a big 27" monitor for under £170

May 31, 2013 by John McGarvey

AOC tech bargain 27" screen{{}}When it comes to screen size, bigger is better. So why settle for anything less than this monster 27" screen from AOC?

Currently available at a surprisingly-affordable £169.98 from Dabs, it'll give you plenty of space to spread out several windows and work comfortably.

About this tech bargain

It wasn't long ago that buying a screen this size would have cost an absolute fortune. But the fact that you can now regularly find 27" screens at under £200 speaks volumes about how much the market has changed.

Quite simply, larger screens are more comfortable to work on for longer periods. You have to shuffle your windows around less, meaning you can work more efficiently.

This AOC E2752V is a great screen for the money, offering DVI and VGA connections which will work with virtually all desktop and laptop computers. (You'll need an adaptor to connect a Mac, but then that goes for most screens in this price bracket.)

See full details and buy now from Dabs >>

You might not think a bigger screen will make much difference to your average working day. But once you've tried one, you won't want to go back.

Business tech bargain: cheap domain names

May 24, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain - .eu domain{{}}If you're looking to bag a cheap domain name for a new project or to safeguard your brand online, domain name specialists 123-reg have a good tech bargain on at the moment.

EU domains for £1.99

You can register a .eu domain of your choice for just £1.99 (+ VAT) for the first year.

While it's fair to say .eu domains aren't the first choice of most brands online, they can be useful if you want to flaunt your international credentials, or simply need a cheap domain for a development or side project.

It's also not a bad idea to grab your business name as a .eu if you're worried about someone else using it for nefarious purposes.

Register a .eu domain >>

This is a decent saving and you'll almost certainly pay more if you buy from elsewhere. Domain names ending in .eu currently cost £4.99 from 1&1 or £14.99 from Easily.

Just remember that this is a deal for the first year, so you'll pay more to renew your domain in subsequent years.

Business tech bargain: Dell XPS 10 tablet for £199

May 17, 2013 by John McGarvey

Dell XPS 10{{}}

The Dell XPS 10 tablet, without the optional keyboard

If you're in the market for a new tablet computer, Dell has knocked £100 off the usual price of its XPS 10 Windows tablet, meaning you can pick up the entry-level 32GB version for just £199 + VAT.

We reviewed the XPS 10 earlier this year and found it to be a solid, capable tablet that has an astonishingly good battery life. Its one Achilles' heel is that it runs Windows RT, a cut-down version of Microsoft's operating system that can only run special Windows RT apps, and not standard Windows software.

However, the range of available apps is expanding, meaning you can still use this tablet for a wide range of tasks. It includes a version of Microsoft Office too, so if you opt for the model with the keyboard (from £289 + VAT) then you'll be getting a nice productivity tool at a bargain price.

Business tech bargain: cut hassle with rechargeable batteries

May 15, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain: battery charger{{}}This isn't strictly a one-off business tech bargain. It's more a pointer to how spending just a small amount now on batteries can save you hassle, waste and - perhaps - money in the future.

Everyone knows about rechargeable batteries, of course. But it's still surprising how many of us don't use them.

Rechargeable batteries work

Look around your office and there are probably plenty of gadgets that could benefit from this business tech bargain. Wireless keyboards and mice, TV, projector and air-con remote controls, speakers, wireless microphones, radios, cameras ... they all have batteries in them.

If your office is overrun with items that frequently require new batteries, switching to rechargeables is a no-brainer. It's easy to keep a few spare sets charged and swap when you need to, and you'll never have to dash out to the corner shop just to carry on working.

Buying rechargeables

There are lots of places to buy rechargeable batteries from online. For instance:

If you're just getting started, you'll need a battery charger too. Probably best to go for something that can recharge most battery types, and stand up to regular use:

Will you really save money?

If you're switching your business to rechargeable batteries, do remember that there's some debate about quite how much money they'll save you.

As a general rule, if your devices need batteries replacing frequently, rechargeables will save you money. If they don't, then the cost benefits are less clear.

But it's not just about money. Rechargeables are more convenient, produce less waste, and are there when you need them. As long as you remember to keep them charged.

Business tech bargain: Asus Fonepad tablet under £180

May 03, 2013 by John McGarvey

Asus Fonepad tech bargain{{}}Asus has just launched a competitively-priced, powerful 7" tablet computer called the Fonepad.

It's going head-to-head with devices like Google's Nexus (which is actually built by Asus) and the Amazon Kindle Fire. At £179 it offers exceptional value for money.

With good reviews, plus features and build quality that are comparable to these two key competitors, Asus hopes the Fonepad's built-in 3G and smart phone features will sway buyers towards its product.

It envisages the Fonepad as being a single device to replace both your smart phone and tabet.

What the experts say

PC Pro Fonepad review:
"An absolute bargain of a compact tablet, whether or not you choose to employ the phone features"

Techradar Fonepad review:
"In summation, the Asus FonePad is a very accomplished Android tablet and offers amazing value-for-money."

We've mentioned these so-called 'phablets' before, and it's possible the Asus is one of the most elegant implementations yet.

With a slot for a 3G SIM card, you can use the Fonepad to access the internet via your mobile phone network.

And - of course - you can make and receive calls. It might be a little large to hold against your head for long features, but with a hands free kit you'll be all set.

Business tech bargain: solid state storage deal

April 17, 2013 by John McGarvey

Tech bargain: Samsung SSD{{}}Solid state drives (SSDs) are superfast replacements for traditional computer hard drives.

Because they rely on flash memory instead of spinning magnetic disks, they have no moving parts and can access data more quickly.

Switching the standard hard drive in your laptop for an SSD can lead to impressive performance improvements. The only problem is that SSDs tend to cost a bit more than an equivalent hard drive.

Having said that, prices have dropped in recent months, and we've just spotted a great deal: currently, you can grab a 500GB Samsung SSD for £249.99 over at Dabs.

That's a good price. But as long as you buy before 15 May, you'll be able to claim £40 cashback, bringing the effective price down to £209.99. Now that is a tech bargain!

See offer and buy online >>

About this tech bargain

This Samsung SSD holds up to 500GB of data, which should be enough for general business use. In fact, it's very generous in SSD terms, and will give you space for an awful lot of music and a fair few films too, making it a good all-round option.

It's a standard-size unit which will slot straight into most laptops in place of the existing hard drive. It comes with all the normal fittings you might need, plus software to help you move your data across.

Replacing your laptop's hard drive with this should lead to noticeable performance improvements, particularly when it comes to starting your computer up, opening software and working with large files.

Business tech bargain: pre-order the new Samsung Galaxy S4

April 03, 2013 by John McGarvey

Samsung Galaxy S4 - preorder{{}}Samsung's latest, greatest smart phone, the Samsung Galaxy S4, is now available to pre-order. If you can't wait to get your hands on this impressive mobile phone, then now's the time to place your order online.

You will, unfortunately, still have to wait until the phone's official release. But over at Carphone Warehouse, if you order today you can expect delivery on 26 April, which is the day the new handset becomes available.

Place your order online now >>

There's a wide range of tariffs to choose from, which could see you pay as little as nothing up front (you'll have to commit to a two-year contract, mind you) to £590 to buy the handset outright.

You'll also receive a free accessory bundle which includes a screen protector, flip cover, in-car charger and 32GB memory card.

About Samsung Galaxy S4 pre-orders

Samsung announced the Galaxy S4 at an event in New York last month. Some of the handset's key features include:

  • Full high-definition screen, which isn't a first for a smart phone but does mean everything looks a little sharper.
  • An eight-core central processing chip, that'll ensure this phone runs superfast (there's a large battery too, to allow for the extra power it'll consume).
  • An NFC (near field communication) chip, which may - in future - allow you to pay for things by tapping your phone on a reader in shops.
  • A 13 megapixel camera, offering excellent quality photos and videos.

As with other Samsung smart phones, the Galaxy S4 will run Google's Android operating system, which means buying one will give you access to an enormous library of free and paid-for apps. It also includes 4G capabilities, ensuring you can use it on EE, currently the UK's only 4G network.

For all that, this phone isn't a vast leap forward over the company's existing S3. It's more of a careful evolution - which should still position it as one of the best smart phones on the market today.

To be sure of getting your hands on one, place your pre-order now.

Business tech bargain: half price fibre broadband

March 13, 2013 by John McGarvey

Fibre optic broadband cables{{}}

Fibre: the secret to faster broadband. (Image: Flickr user James Laurence Stewart)

Here's a tech bargain ideal for home-based businesses looking for an internet connection with a bit more oomph.

Yorkshire broadband firm Plusnet is currently offering its unlimited fibre broadband service at £9.99 for the first six months. That's half the normal price of £19.99.

You'll have to pay line rental (£13.99 a month or £126 a year) on top of that, but the offer makes this broadband tech bargain significantly cheaper than most competitors.

See it now on the Plusnet site >>

Cheaper fibre broadband

Over a year, the Plusnet package will cost you £347.76 - or a little less if you pay the annual line rental up front.

For comparison, BT's Unlimited Infinity 2 package - which has the same 76Mbps speed and unlimited downloads - adds up to £423 over the same period.

About this tech bargain

If - like most of us - your internet connection is still based on ADSL (which uses a traditional copper wire to connect you to the local telephone exchange), this Plusnet package will give you a big speed boost. That's because it uses a modern fibre optic cable to bridge the distance from your street to the exchange.

This allows Plusnet to offer speeds of up to 76Mbps - around ten times faster than the speed of an average UK broadband connection. You'll notice web pages load more snappily, and the extra speed will make a vast difference when you download large files or several people are using the connection at once.

What's more, Plusnet's broadband service generally gets good ratings from users.

The main potential drawback is that you must be based in Plusnet's service area. To see if this includes you, just click Start your order on the Plusnet site, then pop in your postcode when requested.
