Sustainable firms offered chance to boost credentials

Innovative and sustainable small firms can compete to have their efforts recognised, following the launch of the Sustainable City awards.

The awards are open to UK firms of all sizes which can demonstrate outstanding sustainable business practices. Award categories include sustainable procurement, tackling climate change and responsible waste management.

In addition, a specific category is available for small firms – the environmental management in SMEs award. This category recognises innovative practices leading to significant improvements in environmental performance in small and medium-sized enterprises.

"In the face of public sector cutbacks, small firms have stepped up to the plate when it comes to sustainability," said City of London Corporation head of sustainable development Simon Mills. "Resource efficiency and innovative products and services will drive future economic growth.

"For winning organisations, this accolade will help them compete for both limited funding and external support, expanding the reach of their programmes as resources become ever-more precious."

Previous small-business winners have included eco-pubs such as the Duke of Cambridge and Indian restaurant Café Spice Namaste.

"Ethical sourcing is a personal commitment, but it’s also key to our business," said Café Spice Namaste chef-patron Cyrus Todiwala, winner of the leadership in sustainability award. "Customers are increasingly attracted to restaurants that operate in a sustainable way. Winning the award is proof that sustainability can go hand in hand with commercial success."

The deadline for entries is 14 November.
